You went to a wedding at the weekend. The band was great, the disco was on until midnight, and the DJ had the speakers cranked up. You’d remembered to bring a pair of foam plugs from the bathroom cabinet on your way out, but by the time you’d fished them out of your pocket they were a bit dry and crumbly. You shoved them in anyway. One fell out on the dance floor within an hour. The other kept working its way loose. By the time you got home your ears were ringing, and Sunday morning was spent listening to the world through a bit of a fog.

There’s a better way. The custom-made ear protection we fit at our clinics is designed around your ears specifically, not around an “average” ear that doesn’t really exist. Whether you’re trying to sleep next to a snoring partner, swimming regularly, working on a noisy site, playing in a band, or shooting, generic earplugs from the supermarket usually don’t do the job they claim to.

Here’s what we make, why it works, and why the fit is what makes the biggest difference.

1. Sleeping earplugs, for a proper night’s sleep

If you sleep next to a snorer, live near a busy road, or you’re just a lighter sleeper than everyone else in the house, foam plugs are only really a short-term fix. They shift as you move in the night, they irritate the ear canal, and half the time you wake up before they’ve done their job.

Custom sleeping earplugs are moulded precisely to your ear canal, giving a secure, comfortable seal that lasts the whole night. They stay put as you move around, they don’t cause the pressure headaches or morning earache that foam plugs sometimes do, and honestly, most patients tell us it’s the best sleep they’ve had in years.

2. Swim plugs, for water-free ears

Swim plugs are shaped to sit watertight in your ear, reducing the risk of water getting into the ear canal. That matters because water in the ear canal is one of the most common causes of swimmer’s ear and recurring ear infections, which can put people off swimming altogether.

Off-the-shelf swim plugs are made to fit an average ear shape, which for many people simply isn’t a good enough fit to keep water out. Custom swim plugs, fitted to your specific ear, do the job properly. Great for regular swimmers, surfers, and anyone who’s had a run of ear infections.

3. Filtered noise protection, for work and music

Filtered noise protection is designed for situations where you still need to hear conversation, instructions or your own playing clearly, just at a safer volume. The filter reduces the harmful high-volume noise but lets speech and music through, rather than muffling everything indiscriminately.

This is what we fit for musicians, sound engineers, gig-goers, teachers, construction workers, factory workers, farmers and anyone else who spends real time around noise but needs to communicate. Filters come in different strengths (typically 9dB, 15dB or 25dB) depending on how much noise you’re around, and we’ll help you pick the right level at the consultation.

4. Non-filtered noise protection, for the loudest environments

Non-filtered noise protection is built for the highest level of noise reduction. It’s what we fit for shooting, clay pigeon, and other situations involving sudden, very loud impulse noise, where blocking as much sound as possible is the priority.

Because it’s non-filtered, everything is muffled, but that’s the trade-off for maximum protection. If you shoot regularly, this is what you want.

5. Why the custom fit is what actually matters

The biggest issue with generic earplugs is fit. Hearing protection only works properly if it forms a complete seal in the ear canal, and canals vary enormously from person to person. A one-size foam plug is a compromise for almost everyone, meaning the real-world protection is often far lower than the rating on the packet suggests.

Custom protection is fitted from an impression of your actual ear, so it seals consistently every time you put it in. It’s also much more comfortable over long periods, whether that’s an entire night’s sleep or a full shift at work, without the pressure or irritation that comes from foam expanding against sensitive skin. And because they’re made from durable, washable materials, they last for years rather than being thrown away after a single use.

6. The consultation and impression process

Making custom ear protection is straightforward and doesn’t take long. You come into any of our four clinics for a 15 to 20 minute consultation. We’ll have a chat about what you need protection for (sleep, work, music, whatever it is), look in your ears to check they’re clear and healthy, then take an impression using a soft putty-like material that sets in a few minutes.

The impression goes off to the lab, and your finished protection comes back to us within about two weeks. You pop back in to collect them, we check the fit, and you’re away. They last for years and you can just wipe them clean with soap and water.

Prices and where to book

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between filtered and non-filtered protection?

Filtered protection reduces harmful loud noise but lets speech and music through at a safer level, so you can still communicate. Non-filtered protection blocks as much sound as possible for maximum protection, which is ideal for shooting but not great for conversation. Most of our patients want filtered.

How long do custom earplugs last?

Years, usually. Custom ear protection is made from durable, washable materials. As long as you look after them (wash them occasionally with soap and water, store them in the case we give you), a pair should last five years or more. The only reason to replace them earlier is if your ear canal changes shape significantly (which can happen after major weight changes or with age).

Can I use one pair for multiple purposes?

Sometimes, but not always. Sleep plugs are designed for full-noise blocking and comfort. Filtered work/music plugs let sound through at a controlled level. Swim plugs are watertight. If you need protection for different situations, we’d normally recommend a pair for each purpose.

How much do custom earplugs cost?

Swim plugs start at £110 a pair. Filtered noise protection starts at £150 a pair. Sleeping earplugs start at £150 a pair. Higher-specification products and shooting protection are priced separately. All prices include the impression, the finished plugs, and a case to store them in.

How do I clean and look after them?

Wipe them with a damp cloth after each use, and give them a proper wash with mild soap and water every couple of weeks (or after a swim). Store them in the case we provide. Don’t leave them in a hot car or in direct sunlight for extended periods.
