Hearing Tests

Q: Why should I choose a private hearing test over a free one on the high street? A: Free hearing tests offered by high street chains are often brief and primarily focused on selling hearing aids. Our private hearing test at £35 is fully diagnostic — it includes a thorough medical history, an in-ear examination, a full hearing assessment, a middle ear function test (where needed), and speech testing. You’ll leave with a genuinely complete picture of your hearing health, not just a sales pitch.

Q: What happens during a hearing test appointment? A: Your appointment begins with a chat about your medical history and any concerns you have about your hearing. We’ll then look inside your ears, carry out the hearing test itself in a sound-treated environment, and perform additional checks such as a middle ear function test if required. The whole process is relaxed and straightforward — there’s nothing to worry about.

Q: How long does a hearing test take? A: You should allow around 60 to 90 minutes for your appointment. Because our tests are thorough and diagnostic, they take longer than a quick high street screening — but that extra time means we get a full and accurate picture of your hearing.

Q: Can I bring someone with me? A: Absolutely, and we actually encourage it. Bringing a partner, family member, or close friend can be really helpful — they often notice hearing difficulties that you might not be fully aware of yourself, and they can support you in understanding any recommendations we make.

Q: How much does a hearing test cost, and is it worth it? A: Our hearing test is £35. Given the depth of assessment included — medical history, in-ear examination, full audiometry, middle ear testing, and speech testing — we think it represents excellent value. It’s also a small investment that could make a significant difference to your quality of life if a hearing issue is identified early.

Hearing Aids

Q: Why are private hearing aids better than NHS ones? A: NHS hearing aids are a fantastic resource, but waiting times can be long and the range of devices is limited. With us, you have access to the latest technology from leading manufacturers, a fully tailored fitting using Real Ear Measurements (a gold-standard fitting technique rarely used on the high street), and unlimited aftercare for the life of your devices. You’re not just buying a hearing aid — you’re investing in ongoing professional support.

Q: What are Real Ear Measurements and why do they matter? A: Real Ear Measurements (REM) involve placing a tiny microphone in your ear canal to measure exactly how sound is being delivered by the hearing aid in your specific ear. Every ear is shaped differently, so this ensures your hearing aids are precisely calibrated for you — not just programmed to a generic average. It’s the gold standard of hearing aid fitting and something most high street providers simply don’t offer.

Q: How much do hearing aids cost? A: Our hearing aids start from £1,795 per pair, and that price includes your initial testing, a professional REM fitting, and unlimited aftercare for the life of the devices. There are no hidden charges for follow-up appointments or adjustments — we’re with you every step of the way.

Q: What does ‘unlimited aftercare for the life of the device’ actually mean? A: It means exactly what it says. For as long as you’re using your hearing aids, you can come back to us as often as you need — for fine-tuning, adjustments, troubleshooting, or just a catch-up to make sure everything is working well for you. There are no extra fees for any of this. We believe good hearing care doesn’t stop the moment you walk out the door.

Q: How do I know which hearing aid is right for me? A: That’s exactly what we’re here to figure out together. After your diagnostic hearing test, we’ll discuss your lifestyle, your listening priorities, your preferences around style and discretion, and your budget. We work with a range of leading manufacturers and will match you to a device that genuinely suits your needs — not the one with the highest margin.

Ear Wax Removal

Q: Is ear wax removal safe, and does it hurt? A: In the hands of a trained professional, ear wax removal is very safe and should not be painful. We use three methods — microsuction, irrigation, and manual removal — and will choose the most appropriate one for you based on the condition of your ears. Most patients find the procedure comfortable and are surprised by how quick and straightforward it is.

Q: What’s the difference between microsuction and irrigation? A: Microsuction uses a gentle vacuum to remove wax and is widely regarded as the safest and most precise method — it’s performed under direct vision using a microscope or loupe. Irrigation (sometimes called ear syringing) uses a controlled flow of water to flush the ear. Both are effective; the right choice depends on your ear and your wax. We’ll assess which is most appropriate at your appointment.

Q: How much does ear wax removal cost? A: We charge £50 for one ear and £70 for both ears. If we examine your ears and find there is no significant wax present, there is a £25 consultation charge to cover the clinician’s time.

Q: Can I just use ear drops from the chemist instead? A: Over-the-counter drops can sometimes help soften wax and may be enough for mild cases. However, if your ear feels blocked, painful, or your hearing is significantly muffled, it’s better to see a professional. Using cotton buds or attempting to remove wax yourself can push it further in and make things worse. We’d always rather you came to see us than risk causing damage at home.

Q: How do I know if I need ear wax removal? A: Common signs include a feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear, muffled hearing, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing), earache, or a persistent cough. If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s worth getting your ears checked. You don’t need a GP referral — you can book directly with us.

Custom Made Hearing Protection

Q: Why choose custom-made earplugs over foam ones from a shop? A: Off-the-shelf foam earplugs are a one-size-fits-all solution — which means they often don’t fit well, can fall out, or block too much sound. Custom-made earplugs are moulded precisely to the shape of your ear, giving you a far better seal, much greater comfort, and the right level of protection for your specific activity. For regular use, they’re a worthwhile investment.

Q: What situations are custom hearing protection suitable for? A: A wide range, including live music and concerts, motorsport, shooting, swimming, sleeping, working in noisy environments, and more. Some options are designed to reduce volume without distorting sound quality — ideal for musicians or music lovers. If you’re unsure whether we can help with your particular needs, just get in touch and we’ll let you know.

Q: How much does custom hearing protection cost? A: Custom-made protection starts from £60, though pricing varies depending on the type and manufacturer. We have an extensive range, so please contact us for a full price list tailored to what you need.

Q: How are custom earplugs made? A: We take an impression of your ear canal using a soft, safe material — a quick and comfortable process that takes just a few minutes. That impression is then sent to a specialist manufacturer who crafts your earplugs to fit your exact ear shape. The finished product is precise, comfortable, and built to last.

Q: Is it really worth protecting my hearing now if I feel fine? A: Absolutely. Hearing loss caused by noise exposure is permanent and cumulative — it builds up over time without you noticing until significant damage has already occurred. Custom protection is one of the simplest and most effective ways to safeguard your hearing for the long term. Think of it like sunscreen for your ears.

Tinnitus Support

Q: Is there actually anything that can be done about tinnitus? A: Yes — and this is one of the most important things we want people to know. Many people are told, or come to believe, that nothing can be done. That simply isn’t true. While there is currently no single cure for tinnitus, there is a great deal we can do to reduce its impact, help you manage it, and significantly improve your quality of life. You don’t have to just live with it.

Q: What does a tinnitus consultation involve? A: Your consultation includes a thorough review of your medical history, an examination of your ears, and a full diagnostic hearing assessment. From there, we build a bespoke care plan tailored to your experience of tinnitus — because no two people experience it in exactly the same way. The consultation costs £95.

Q: My tinnitus comes and goes — do I still need help? A: Intermittent tinnitus is still worth having assessed. Understanding what might be triggering it, ruling out any underlying causes, and having a plan in place for when it flares up can all make a meaningful difference. Early support often leads to better outcomes, so it’s worth coming in sooner rather than waiting until it becomes more persistent.

Q: Will I need hearing aids to manage my tinnitus? A: Not necessarily. Hearing aids can be helpful for some people with tinnitus, particularly when there is also an element of hearing loss, but they are just one of several tools available. Your care plan will be built around what works best for you as an individual.

Q: I’ve had tinnitus for years — is it too late to get help? A: It’s never too late. We see patients who have been managing tinnitus on their own for many years and find that the right support still makes a real difference. Whatever stage you’re at, we’d encourage you to come and talk to us.

Hearing Aid Registration

Q: What does hearing aid registration mean? A: If you already have hearing aids but are unhappy with the care or service you’ve been receiving from your current provider, you can register with us instead. We’ll take over your ongoing care, carry out a full diagnostic hearing test, give your devices a thorough clean and check, and make initial adjustments to ensure they’re properly set up for you.

Q: How much does it cost to switch to Hearing Aid Solutions? A: Registration costs £250, which covers your diagnostic hearing test, a full clean and check of your existing hearing aids, and initial adjustments. Any follow-up appointments after that are charged at £50 per session.

Q: Can you service hearing aids that you didn’t originally fit? A: In most cases, yes. We work with a wide range of manufacturers and can service, adjust, and support many types of hearing aid. If you’re unsure whether your specific devices are compatible, just get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise.

Q: What if my hearing aids need more significant work after I register? A: If your devices need repairs or adjustments beyond the initial registration service, we’ll discuss the options with you clearly and transparently before any work is carried out. There are no surprises.

Q: Why would I switch providers rather than just stay with my current one? A: There are lots of reasons people look for a change — perhaps they feel rushed at appointments, struggle to get follow-up support, or simply don’t feel listened to. At Hearing Aid Solutions, we take the time to get to know each patient individually. If you’re not getting the care you deserve, you deserve better.

Hearing Aid Cleaning

Q: How often should I have my hearing aids professionally cleaned? A: There’s no strict rule, but a professional clean every few months is generally a good habit — more frequently if you notice a change in sound quality, if the devices feel blocked, or if you’ve been in a particularly dusty or humid environment. Regular cleaning helps extend the life of your devices and keeps them performing at their best.

Q: Do I need an appointment for a hearing aid clean? A: No — if you’re an existing client of ours, you’re welcome to drop in without an appointment. Just leave your hearing aids with us for around 15 to 20 minutes and we’ll have them cleaned and checked for you. No charge, no fuss.

Q: What does professional hearing aid cleaning involve? A: We clean and inspect all components of your hearing aid, including the microphone ports, receiver, tubing (if applicable), and any custom moulds or domes. We also carry out a basic function check to make sure everything is working as it should. It’s a quick but thorough process.

Q: My hearing aids sound muffled — could they just need a clean? A: Quite possibly, yes. A build-up of wax, moisture, or debris in the microphone or receiver is one of the most common causes of reduced performance. A professional clean often resolves the issue immediately. If the clean doesn’t solve it, we can investigate further while you’re with us.

Q: Is this service available at all your clinic locations? A: Yes — our free cleaning service for existing clients is available across all four of our clinics in Carmarthen, Haverfordwest, Llanelli, and Cardiff. Just pop in during opening hours.

Home Visits

Q: Who are home visits suitable for? A: Home visits are ideal for anyone who finds it difficult to travel to one of our clinics — whether due to mobility issues, illness, caring responsibilities, or simply because they feel more comfortable in their own surroundings. Receiving care at home doesn’t mean receiving lesser care; we bring the same professional standards to your door.

Q: What services are available as a home visit? A: We currently offer home visit hearing tests and ear wax removal. A hearing test at home is £70. Ear wax removal at home is £120 whether for one or both ears, and if you’d like both a hearing test and wax removal in the same visit, the combined fee is £155.

Q: Do you cover my area for home visits? A: Home visits depend on location and availability, so we’d ask you to get in touch to check. We’re always happy to do our best to accommodate you, so if you’re unsure, please just ask.

Q: Is the quality of care the same at home as in the clinic? A: Absolutely. Our clinicians bring the same equipment, skills, and professional standards to every home visit. The setting might be your living room rather than a clinic, but the care is exactly the same.

Q: How do I book a home visit? A: Simply get in touch with us by phone or via our website to discuss your needs and check availability. We’ll find a time that works for you and confirm everything in advance so you know exactly what to expect.
